ADENET lay in bed that night, vividly aware of the thickness of the single wall separating his room from the one Marc was using, and mulled over the afternoon and evening. Even aside from the whole part about his wolf being convinced Marc was his mate, the wizard was not at all what Adenet had expected. He had expected someone more like the two men who had come to inspect the den: hard, closed, distrustful men worn down by life and magic. Instead he had gotten Marc.

Sweet, energetic, youthful, innocent Marc with the laughing green eyes and the light-brown hair and all the effervescence that had been lacking in Adenet’s life for… well, forever, certainly since they had realized how serious the situation was for the pack. Adenet could tell himself intellectually that Marc was no more attractive than any of a hundred other men, but that did not matter one bit to Adenet’s wolf. The wolf had taken one look at the man and decided he was the most beautiful thing in the world. Period. Full stop. End of discussion.

Adenet shuddered when he thought about the upcoming ritual. Always before, he had been able to change into wolf form and participate as expected, the offer of sex enough to rouse his wolf even if Adenet had no interest in anything beyond the hopeful procreative outcome. Now, though, Adenet’s wolf had one focus and one focus only: the man sleeping in the next room. The man who would be observing the ritual during the full moon, watching Adenet’s wolf have sex with someone else, assuming Adenet could make his wolf go through with it.

Usually it was the other way around: Adenet stepped back once the words of the ritual were complete and let his wolf take control. He would not be able to do that this time. If he let his wolf take charge, the animal would bolt straight for Marc, and that would be the end of any kind of secrecy. Mating between incompatible species was not an option, but Adenet’s wolf could change forms at will as well. He would be human in a heartbeat, naked and aroused and all over Marc before the other man knew what hit him.

Not the impression Adenet wanted to leave on the wizard, not to mention that he would probably end up flat on his arse from a spell. Marc might claim not to be a powerful wizard like some of the others, but Adenet was sure fear would boost his abilities enough for him to defend himself from Adenet’s unwelcome advances, because even if Marc was gay, he would not be interested in someone like Adenet, older, bitter, tied to a dying pack.

If only Marc were a little less perfect…. Adenet rolled over with a grumbled curse. He knew that was his wolf talking. No one was perfect, no matter how much Adenet’s wolf wanted it to be that way. Objectively, Adenet could see that Marc’s forehead was a little too
